Organic samples such as plastics or polymers can be difficult to digest but NAA uses a direct measurement and avoids the problems of incomplete dissolution or the loss of volatile elements that are common to chemical techniques. The major elements (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen) of typical organic materials are a favourable matrix for NAA. Thus no chemical pre-treatment is needed, and contamination, false positives and analyte losses are avoided.
